Description
Stoneware crock using the traditional inverted bell method. The bell lid holds butter firmly, submerged in a shallow pool of water in the base. This cold water seal blocks air and dust, preserving churned butter without refrigeration. It holds roughly one standard American stick, or four ounces, packed firmly into the dry cup to prevent slippage.
The heavy ceramic walls buffer ambient temperature shifts on the countertop. Glazed interior and exterior surfaces wipe clean and resist oil absorption, while the unglazed foot ring prevents slipping on stone or laminate surfaces. Add cold tap water up to the marked fill line and refresh the water every three days to maintain freshness.
Keep the crock out of direct sunlight and away from the stove. If your kitchen routinely exceeds eighty degrees Fahrenheit, butter softens past the point of adhesion and can slide into the reservoir. Hand washing preserves the stoneware glaze best, though both pieces tolerate the top rack of a dishwasher.
